What is a Community School?

A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, services, supports and opportunities leads to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities. (Coalition for Community Schools – widely used definition of community schools)  Hartford Community Schools are a strategy for aligning resources to support student achievement.

Principle

How are Community Schools different from traditional schools?

Community schools are open beyond the regular hours – from early morning into the evening, on weekends and holidays. The school becomes a center of community life, with activities, services and supports for students, their families, as well as the wider community. Nationally, it has been demonstrated that these changes lead to improved attendance, improved academic and behavioral outcomes for students, as well as neighborhood stability and other improvements in community life.
