Substitute Teacher

How do I become a substitute teacher in Hartford?

The first step is to complete our online application.  Use the heading “part-time teachers.”   Before completing the online application, be sure to review it thoroughly.  You will be called in for an interview and required to bring official transcripts showing degree(s) conferred.  Once this process is completed, you will be notified that you have officially been accepted into our pool of available substitutes.

So, now that I’m an official Hartford sub, what happens next?

The Hartford Public Schools (HPS) welcomes you to our academic team!  As a substitute teacher you are considered to be a valuable member of our team in educating our students.

Your role as a substitute teacher is essential to the success of our educational programs.  We are aware of the challenges that lie ahead for you and place much confidence in your ability to provide our children with a continuity of learning in the absence of their regular teacher.

As a substitute, you will have the benefit of becoming a member of the Substitute’s Union after working 60 days.  After working 115 days,  you will be eligible to receive benefits for medical coverage.  And, after one year, as explained in the Substitute Teacher’s Contract, the HPS offers course reimbursements and bonuses for days worked.  Please see the Union Contract for details.
