Reporting for an Assignment Please make every effort to arrive on time at the school. Preferably fifteen (15) minutes early to acclimate yourself and to allow for inclement weather. If you are called late and cannot meet the arrival time, please call the Executive Assistant of the school and let him/her know that you are on your way. If they are unable to be reached please call the substitute specialist. Register immediately in the Principal’s office with the Executive Assistant and make sure that you sign in the Substitute Log. Ask for special instructions such as: extra duties; irregularities in the schedule; instructional materials; responsibilities as to the lunch hour or any changes planned that will affect the usual procedure for the day. Check the teacher’s mailbox to see if there are any bulletins, messages of announcements. Personal mail should be left in the box. Classroom Procedure Keep a dated list of pupils’ attendance. All teachers should have a folder for substitute teachers with a procedure outlined for attendance. Do not write in the teacher’s grade book. Plan to spend the entire time working with the students. Keep all students assigned to you under supervision at all times. Please make sure you are aware of all students in your classroom and attentive. Familiarize yourself with the fire drill procedures. Know the route your students should take to exit the building. Items Requiring Office Approval Pupils are not excused to leave school under any circumstances. If you determine a student should be excused to go home, send the student to the Principal’s office. Be sure to let the office know when you send a student from the classroom to the office for any reason. Completing an Assignment Remain on duty until all your students are dismissed. The classroom and desks should be left in good order. Please be sure to close the windows, put up the books, etc. Return to the office to let them know you have completed your assignment and see if there is anything else needed. Return any supplies that belong to the office. Do not take the keys and class records from the school. At the end of the day, please check with the Executive Assistant to see if your services will be needed for the following day. Special Programs In an attempt to meet the needs of all students, the Hartford Public School System has many special educational programs throughout the school day. You will likely have small groups of students scheduled for resource room classes, remedial reading, and speech therapy groups.
Individual School Requirements Information and policies pertaining to a specific school should be obtained from the school executive. Many schools have their own information packets. When arriving to the school, please go to the office to obtain an information packet. Some Last Notes Please call the Substitute Office (695-8620) if you would like to make changes to your substitute profile, you can visit the web site if you wish to change your telephone number.
