The SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) Field Test
This spring (2014,) our students will have the unique opportunity to take the new national assessment, the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC), instead of the CMT or CAPT.
All students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 will be participating in the new Smarter Balanced Assessments for Literacy and Mathematics instead of the CMT or CAPT for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.
Our schools, along with many other Connecticut schools are administering the SBAC Field Test this spring.
Please note that students in grades 5 and 8 will still take the Science CMT and students in grade 10 will take the CAPT Science assessment.
Students identified through the Planning and Placement process will continue to take the Skills Checklist this spring.
The SBAC Field Test will be administered to all students via computers. The total testing time is similar to or slightly less than the CMT or CAPT.
While this new test will not be officially administered to all students in Connecticut until the spring of 2015, all public schools in Hartford will be participating in the field test this spring.
Will Test Scores Be Received as Part of the Test this Year?
At this time, the Connecticut State Department of Education will not provide student test scores from the SBAC Field Test this spring.
However, taking this field test will greatly benefit your child because he or she will experience the new test a year in advance and become more familiar with the different types of questions.
In the spring of 2015, we anticipate that this assessment will be official mode of testing our students’ achievement and test scores will be received and shared with the families of the students.
What are the Testing Dates?
The anticipated state testing dates are listed below for each level.
Grades 6, 7, 8 and 11 - March 18- April 4*
Grades 3, 4, and 5 - April 7 -April 25
Following these testing dates a makeup window will be available for those students who missed the initial testing dates of the Smarter Balanced Field Test.
* In Hartford Spring Break takes place 3/31/14 to 4/4/14, so no testing will occur on those dates.
Will anyone still take the CMT/CAPT Tests?
All students in Grades 5, 8 and 10 will participate in the CMT or CAPT Science Test. Additional information regarding the Science Test administration will be provided in another update.
