Academic/School Programs

The Culinary Academy has applied to NAF as a Year of Planning site for affiliation as a NAF Academy of Hospitality and Tourism.  The 2011-12 YOP will be the foundational year during which the Culinary Academy will frame the process for its development as a NAF academy model and will compile a YOP Portfolio detailing these processes.  A NAF YOP Guidebook and NAF Network Support will guide the development of the NAF model components to include structure, instructional plans, personalization strategies and partnership plans.

The NAF Academy of Hospitality and Tourism education reform, established in 1987, is in direct alignment with the reform put in motion in 2007 by Dr. Adamowski, a reform based on the principles of Rigor, Relevance and Relationships.  NAF Academy students learn real-life lessons in related businesses outside of school that are integrated with rigorous classroom curriculum.  The program demands strong academic foundation in the core curriculum which will prepare students for post-secondary studies in hospitality and tourism.  NAF academies are committed to having students graduate prepared for college and professional success beyond high school.  Curriculum for the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism contains essential content based on expertise from leaders in the hospitality and tourism industry and education experts.  Along with required academic courses for graduation, students take one or two specialized courses each semester which include courses such as:

• Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism

• Economics

• The Business of Hospitality and Tourism

• Geography and World Culture, Sports, Entertainment and Event Management

• Principles of Hospitality and Tourism

The paid internship is an integral component to the NAF Academy model.  Students work as paid interns at hotels, museums, travel centers, sports facilities and other hospitality and tourism-related settings.  These internships connect academies to the real world of work and establish important relationships between students and adult professionals in the related fields of hospitality and tourism.

The Culinary Academy will join three other NAF academies in Hartford’s portfolio of schools:  The Academy of Engineering and Green Technology, High School, Inc., and Pathways to Technology Magnet School.
