Latino Studies Academy at Burns

The Academy for Latino Studies is a dynamic PK-8 community-based school that will serve as Hartford’s first of two language study schools. The sister school to this Academy will be the Asian Studies Academy to open in 2010. Both schools will interact through shared student activities and events. Students who complete the Latino Studies program will be promoted to a new Advanced World Languages high school where they can continue their world affairs and language-based studies.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Burns Academy of Latino Studies, a community school, is to meet the diverse educational needs and learning styles of all students within a safe, supportive, and challenging learning environment, as they become responsible, productive, and contributing citizens of an ever-changing world.

• Comprehensive elementary and middle school instructional curriculum geared towards high school and college preparation

• Literacy: Haskins Initiative K-2; SRA: Imagine It! K-5; 6th & 7th Reader’s Workshop

• Everyday Math

• Spanish & Latino Studies K-7

• Connecticut Geographic Alliance partnership

• Field studies that expand the curriculum beyond the classroom

• COMPASS Learning Partnership-After school Initiative

Special Recognitions/Awards:

. Mrs. Vivian Rivera- Jeffery, Support Facilitator named Hartford’s Teacher of the Year 2008-2009

. 3rd grade placed 2nd in the District Vocabulary Bowl

. 6th grade placed third in the District most improved in Math on 2009 CMT’s (16.1 % increase)

. 5th grade placed second in the District most improved in Math on 2009 CMT’s (24.8% increase)
