McDonough Expeditionary Learning School is (MELS) a newly redesigned neighborhood Expeditionary Learning (EL) middle school; serving students grades 6-8. Current research on the EL school model has shown it to be a successful reform model that engages students in real learning while increasing student achievement.
MELS students will engage in in-depth learning through learning expeditions which are interdisciplinary, project-based units of study that require students to engage in research, use the community in authentic ways and communicate what they have learned through a culminating presentation of their final product to outside audiences. Through this approach to teaching and learning students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills.
Major characteristics of the Expeditionary Learning instructional model include:
-Student empowerment to pursue content knowledge on their own
-Student demonstration of knowledge through multiple presentation modes
-Student connections to community and field experts
-Integration of literacy
-An integrated curriculum
-Infusion of technology
-High academic achievement through real world projects within an active, engaging and rigorous curriculum
-Workshop Model Instruction
-A construct that builds on students’ existing understanding
Mission : The purpose of the McDonough Expeditionary Learning School (MELS) is to increase student achievement and engagement through rigorous, compelling and interdisciplinary learning expeditions.
Vision : All students in MELS will embark on an academically rigorous journey to develop a personal compass which will provide direction as they navigate their way within the world. Teachers in the MELS will implement a high quality curriculum with engaging interdisciplinary units that develop students’ ability to solve problems and think critically. Teachers will be committed to educating all students with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully perform high school level work without remediation. The accountability for educational and character development of all students will be a collaborative enterprise of staff, families and community to develop the whole child in an atmosphere of authentic care. Students in MELS will go beyond studying academics-they will learn to think and act like scholars.
