E.B. Kennelly School services grades K-8 including a Pre-K Montessori class consisting of children 3-6 years old.
E.B. Kennelly has made academic gains in the areas of reading and writing due to the implementation of a Comprehensive School Reform Model and Direct Instruction. Kennelly is the only school in the district utilizing Direct Instruction for the elementary level. Accelerated Reading is an independent reading program also being added to the curriculum to include and expose the students to more outside reading. Computerized assessments will be used to monitor students' progress. The Reasoning, Writing and Spelling components were added to enhance instruction in all kindergarten to sixth grade classrooms. E.B. Kennelly School received a commendation from the Connecticut State Department of Education for extraordinary student achievement on the Connecticut Mastery Test. The school also received the SRA 2002 Academic Recognition Award for instructional achievement.
To acknowledge student's accomplishments, Student of the Month assemblies are held monthly for grades kindergarten to eight. Students pictures are displayed in the school and on the local access channel. E.B. Kennelly offers basketball and football intramurals throughout the year. There are also a variety of programs offered by OPMAD (Organized Parents Make A Difference) after school: drama, dance, arts & crafts, homework club, tutoring, karate, crochet and sewing classes.
