The Vision

Thomas J. McDonough Elementary School will be an environment in which students, staff and families are learners for life.  The school community will embrace culture, technology, leadership skills as well as each individual’s talents and interests. The students at McDonough Elementary School will develop the academic skills required to meet State of Connecticut standards.

The school community will work collaboratively and share in the decision-making in the school. The school will be first and foremost a safe and nurturing environment for all with a clear and consistent focus on students’ academic progress.

The Mission

The Thomas J. McDonough Elementary School exists to provide all students with access to participation in a global economy through attainment of Academic Standards of the State of Connecticut and readiness for secondary education and beyond.

Hartford Public Schools Goals

GOAL 1: To accelerate the performance of students in Pre-K-12 by educating all students to the     highest academic standards.

GOAL 2: To provide a safe effective learning environment.

GOAL 3: To provide highly effective and efficient operational systems with resources that support student achievement.

GOAL 4: To ensure strong community collaboration and family involvement to support increased student achievement.



The classes offered at McDonough- 1 Pre-K, 15 Eng Monolingual, 3 Dual Language, 1 bilingual and I combination bilingual (grades 5 &6), 1 LTSSS. There are three full time and one part-time special education resource teachers facilitating the inclusion model. Other resources offered include Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, Speech and Language, English as a Second Language and Occupational and Physical Therapy. McDonough is complete with a full-time nurse who provides health services and a dental clinic operated by part-time dental hygienists available to all students.

Additional services:
Additional services are provided to our families through our Family Resource Center. McDonough School has an active Parent Teacher Organization, which offers potluck dinners, dances, ice cream socials, and homework clubs. Read and Rise- a program offered through the Urban League which teaches parents how to help instruct their children regarding early literacy skills. 2 certified reading tutors and 2 non-certified math/reading tutors are available.

Additional Programs:
McDonough implement Literacy by Design authored by Rigby as our core reading program for grades K-3 and maintain SFA for grades 4-6. McDonough School offers the Constanoble Math program for third and fifth grade students and a Character Education Program that promotes positive self-esteem and student behavior to support academic achievement. Guidance for the Success for All Reading Program is implemented on a daily schedule.

Community Partners:
Thomas J. McDonough School has formed several mutually beneficial community partnerships. These include a mentoring program offered by Big Brothers and Big Sisters, an inclusive Cub Scout Troop supported by the Hartford Association for Retarded Citizens, Inc., and an after-school program sponsored by Hartford Neighborhood Centers. Additional community partners are:
