Thirman L. Milner was named after the first African American Mayor in New England. The school was constructed in 1924 and designed in neo-gothic style. An addition was completed in 1927. In 1996, a new addition was built and comprehensive renovations took place within the existing structure. The Milner School is situated in the north end of Hartford close to downtown. The majority of the children at Milner speak English as their primary language. About 30% of the students primary language is one other than English. About 30% of the homes speak Spanish as their primary language. The student body of Thirman Milner School includes children from pre-school to the 6th grade. Milner has two Computer Labs and provides computer classes for parents as well as teachers. Services are provided for West Indian students Through the New Arrival Program.
