Sánchez Students:
Sánchez School enrollment is just under 500 students. The school is located in a neighborhood that is predominantly Hispanic with 98.9% of our children having non-English speaking parents at home. Although the school has both bilingual and mainstream classes, for virtually all students, Spanish is their first language. Nearly half of our students qualify for the Federal Free/Reduced Price Meals that are provided before school and at lunch.

Staff and Resources:
Sánchez staff is very diverse, approximately half minority, and is a living model for respectful multiculturalism as student and staff languages and cultures are celebrated. The average number of years experience teaching in Connecticut is ten while nearly 80% of teachers hold a Master’s Degree or above. There are 39 certified teachers, two administrators, a library/media specialist, a social worker and a psychologist, and 20 non-certified instructional assistants working in the building. A medical clinic and full-service dental clinic are housed in the building. These resources serve not only the Sánchez community but also neighboring communities where clinics are not available in the neighborhood school.

Technology:
Sánchez School has a computer lab of 20 computers in the media center and each classroom has two computers for student and teacher use. All computers have high speed internet access and teachers make a concerted effort to integrate the use of technology into curriculum. Additionally, computers are used for district-mandated individualized math and reading practice for 45 minutes daily.

Mastery Test Performance:
The state of Connecticut requires that the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) be given each fall to all fourth, sixth and eighth grade students. In the media, scores for this test have come to be regarded as the measure of success for a school or district and results are compared extensively. Sánchez School is proud to note that it has shown consistent progress over the last three years.
