Mission Statement:
SAND Elementary School must be a school of active learners, where each child is recognized as an individual with different interests, learning styles, learning rates, emotional and social maturity levels. Therefore, we at SAND, in collaboration with parents and community organizations, will develop and implement educational programs to ensure academic excellence for all.

Resources:
SAND is fortunate to have a working collaboration with the Hartford Public Library. Its Ropkins Branch is located within the SAND building, creating a unique opportunity for students, families and staff to access a wealth of material on-site. A full-service dental clinic is also housed in our building as well as a Family Resource Center.

About our school:
SAND Elementary School derives its name from a neighborhood action league formed in the 1960’s called South Arsenal Neighborhood Development (SAND). The original school for the neighborhood was built in 1899 but was razed to make room for a campus-style school in the 60’s. At that time it was known as the SAND Everywhere School. After many years of service, the campus school was also razed and our new facility was built in the mid 1990’s, opening in 1998. We now boast a computer lab with 25 Gateway computers and a state-of-the-art auditorium with a digital projector. Our classrooms each have 4 to 6 computers, a desk-jet printer, an overhead projector, a 32-inch monitor and a VCR. Students utilize this technology to conduct research, publish final writing drafts and reinforce reading comprehension skills.
