11th Annual Roberto Clemente Celebration
Congratulations to the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy (SMSA) students, staff, and community partners who made the 11th Annual Roberto and Vera Clemente Life Commemoration event! Students, the Hartford Police Department, the Hartford Fire Department, and representatives from the Puerto Rican Day Parade and Miss Puerto Rico pageant gathered at Dunkin Donuts Park on Sunday, March 19 to celebrate the impact and legacy of the baseball legend and his wife, Vera. The Puerto Rican natives were humanitarians, philanthropists, and civil rights activists.
For their Capstone project, SMSA students Rosalyn Collado and Mily Rodriguez coordinated the event alongside the Roberto Clemente Committee. The students also held a poetry contest at their school with the theme of “making the world a better place.” The winners included first place Emir Musik, a tie for second place between Megan Rothwell and Christopher Diaz, and third place, Mahalia Fobbs!
Thank you to the members of the Class of 2022 and former Roberto Clemente Committee members, Nairoby Hiraldo, Samantha Diaz, and Jhoanely Torres, who came back to MC this year’s event. Special thanks to Alex Mercado, and the rest of the committee members Pedro Mercado, John Murphy, Jhoanely Torres, Carla Fernandez, Sammy Vega, Julio Concepcion, Donna Swarr, Eugenio Caro, Freddy DeJesus, State Rep. Geraldo Reyes, Nairoby
Hiraldo, Samantha Diaz, and Yisenia Martinez for welcoming and supporting our students.
