Breakthrough Magnet School South Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month!

Breakthrough Magnet School South has been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in so many fun and creative ways – thanks in large part to their staff Culture Committee!

This piece, “Lola” was created by wonderful art teacher, Carma Simpson-Liburd, and students in grades 5-8.

Some of the many and varied events and activities have included:

  • parent guest speakers in classrooms and at Community Meeting,
  • cafe staff playing Latin music during lunch waves,
  • their Executive Assistant dancing with students at arrival time,
  • a local hip hop artist who came to speak to middle school students,
  • a beautiful artistic display on our “Tree of Kindness” wall when you walk into our main hallway,
  • our middle school cheer squad and our Spanish teacher teach the whole school a Latin dance.

On Friday, October 18, the school will be culminating their celebration at their weekly “Community Meeting.”  Not only will they be having Lorena Garay perform different music from Latin America ( https://youtu.be/u3k4Jwnc0-w), but they will also be completing their school-wide classroom door contest, in which students and their teachers are decorating their doors to represent Hispanic Heritage Month!
