A Message From Beth Schiavino-Narvaez, Ed.D. – Superintendent of Schools
English — Español
Dear Hartford Public Schools Community,
I am incredibly honored to serve as superintendent of Hartford Public Schools (HPS), and I look forward to working with you to ensure that every student and every school thrives. Hartford is an amazing city with a rich history. I am excited to make it my home.
Over the past few months of the search process, I have been inspired by your passion for the district and your willingness to think boldly—and differently—about creating the very best educational opportunities for our students. I quickly realized that we share a deep belief in the power of education to transform the lives of children. Working together, I know that we can make this belief a reality for all students.
In an effort to learn more about the district’s considerable strengths and its persistent challenges, and to build our shared vision for the future, I will begin my tenure as superintendent with a structured entry plan. The purpose of the plan is to interact with a variety of stakeholders and community leaders with diverse perspectives. The insights I gain will help me make informed decisions that will build on accomplishments of the past and take Hartford Public Schools to new levels of success. The plan will enable us to begin working together purposefully and allow me to “hit the ground learning.” It will serve as a beginning: of our partnership and our embracing a new set of actions that will evolve and expand with your input and our learning.
We must collectively build on the progress made over the past eight years under the portfolio strategy. Important promises have been made to our children: a promise that all students will read at or above grade level by third grade—a foundational milestone in a child’s school career that helps set him or her on a path to success; a promise to ensure that our graduates are college ready and that we will assist them with resources that can make college a reality for students who might otherwise not have this opportunity; and a promise that the school a parent chooses for their child will be a high-performing school—no exceptions.
Although we have made much progress, we still have substantially more work to do to keep these promises. And we will do it to make certain that every student graduates from Hartford Public Schools with multiple options for his or her future.
I am impressed by Hartford’s commitment to learning and innovation. Thank you in advance for your willingness to engage with me during this entry process and beyond. You have my commitment to work effectively and urgently on behalf of the students and families of our city. You also have my promise to partner with the entire Hartford community to focus on a vibrant and transformative future for all of our students.
Sincerely, Beth Schiavino-Narvaez, Ed.D.
