A Summer Message from Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez
Another school year has come to an end! As we start the summer break, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge some of our accomplishments and provide you with some important information.
Our Students
Congratulations to our students for their achievements throughout the school year. They excelled in academics, athletics, the arts, project-based learning, internships, community service, at the National Invention Convention, as new English Learners, and so much more.
Congratulations to our graduates! We are so proud of each and every one of them. Our seniors have received hundreds of acceptance letters and are on their way to college, armed forces, and career education. We wish them great success in the next steps of their journey. We hope they come back to visit us and to work with us in the future.
Our Teachers
In May, we celebrated our teachers at the Teacher of the Year banquet. Congratulations to all our teachers, and especially to Benjamin Carlson of Annie Fisher STEM Magnet School who is our 2018 Hartford Public Schools Teacher of the Year.
Our teachers inspire us with their words, their thoughts, and their deeds. Magic happens in classrooms around our district every day. We thank them for their hard work and for believing that our children deserve the very best.
End of Year School Success Stories
You can explore success stories from our schools as seen through the priorities of our District Model for Excellence (Teaching & Learning, Family & Community Partnerships, Operational Effectiveness, and School Climate & Culture) by clicking here.
Thanks to our students, teachers, families, our community partners, and everyone in our district for working together. We are on target in our transition work to restructure and re-imagine our school district in order to provide high quality teaching and learning to ALL.
Summer Programs
Summer is a time for fun and a time to continue learning and reading. We hope you enjoy the many opportunities for Summer Learning and continuous improvement for our students in the next months.

One of my leadership expectations for all staff and students in the district is the idea of continuous improvement; we must all strive to get a little better at what we do day-by-day. The most important thing you can do for your child this summer is to encourage them to read daily. Some of the best summer adventures are as close as the books in your local library!
Back to School / School Calendar
Mark your calendar today! The new school year begins on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. You can view next year’s school district calendar here.
I look forward to sharing stories of summer adventures with you and your students when we return. In the meantime, I wish you a safe and happy summer.
Gratefully,
Leslie Torres-Rodriguez, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
