Academy of Engineering & Green Technology Students Give State Commissioner of Education a Tour of Classrooms and Projects
Student guides chat with Commissioner Roberge-Wentzell
On May 7th, Commissioner Diana Roberge-Wentzell visited AoEGT to congratulate the school, its teachers, students and leaders on their Green Ribbon Award designation from the United States Department of Education, and to understand their successes and challenges.
Teacher Dave Mangus (center) helps the students explain the virtues of their lunar rover, back from competition at NASA in Alabama.
She was joined by Hartford Public Schools Superintendent Beth Schiavino-Narvaez, and other HPS leaders. Two student guides, principal Mike Maziarz, and teacher David Mangus led the group through the classrooms viewing projects as varied as solar arrays, robots, a curriculum garden (below,) and a lunar rover (above.)
The Commissioner was able to witness many examples of hands-on learning, and the crucial, invaluable credo practiced by AoEGT teachers: Guide the students as they learn to solve problems independently.
