Adult Education Center's Student of the Month is Elsie Ortiz from the External Diploma Program

Elsie Ortiz was selected as the Student of the Month in the Adult Education Center’s External Diploma Program.  Ms. Ortiz recently completed the requirements for a high school diploma.

Elsie commented that she dropped out of school at age 15 after she got pregnant.  She attended numerous schools and programs over the years, including Literacy Volunteers, Family Life Education, Hartford Adult Education, and Capital Community College (GED and ESL classes).  Ms. Ortiz stated that she learned something valuable from every program she was in.

Today, Elsie has three children and the advice she gives everyone she knows is to stay in school and never give up.  She adds that if you make a mistake, don’t look back but look forward and do better.  Her oldest son is in his third year at the University of CT, her other son recently started a vocational program and her daughter is an honor roll student at Hartford Public High School.
