Bridging the Entrepreneurial Divide: Babson College Graduate Students Mentor Sport and Medical Sciences Academy’s Entrepreneurship Students

Hartford, CT, (Fri. Mar 31 2017) — Coffees, bagels and business plans were scattered across two dozen tables in the conference room at the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy (SMSA) last Friday morning as 35 Babson College graduate students and 65 SMSA entrepreneurship students came together for a day of coaching and business planning.

All 100 students worked together to reach one common goal: to further their entrepreneurial journey. The SMSA students are enrolled in the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE)’s course, which focuses on the entrepreneurial mindset, 21st century career-development skills and methods for starting a business. They each received coaching from the Babson students, and valuable feedback on their business ideas. They learned on how to price their products, add a competitive edge to their business, and forecast future sales.

The Babson students – enrolled in the Masters of Science in Management in Entrepreneurial Leadership (MSEL) at the world’s leading collegiate institution for entrepreneurship education – had an opportunity to hone their skills coaching and mentoring young entrepreneurs on critical success factors such as developing successful business models and identifying end customers.

Wendy Murphy, Associate Professor of Management for the Babson MSEL program, commented “We are honored to participate in this opportunity each year, where our students have the chance to share their passion and entrepreneurial experience with NFTE students. Our Babson students walk away inspired by these high school students and their entrepreneurial spirits. For Babson, this is a true win-win relationship and a memorable highlight of our program.”

SMSA’s veteran NFTE teacher, Anne Nguyen, had this to say about the day “I have the opportunity to see my students evolve and grow their entrepreneurial mindset throughout the semester. But no one could predict how much they evolved over these 88 minute sessions. After meeting with the coaches from Babson for just an hour and a half, my students came out of their shells, opening themselves up to feedback, and connecting with college students who believe in their potential. For many students, this experience will have a lasting impact well beyond these four walls.”

SMSA student projects ranged from a drone service that captures incredible footage of celebratory events such as weddings or graduations, to natural bath bombs for sensitive skin types. Students will spend the rest of their year completing their business plans and preparing for their business plan competition this spring.

With NFTE as the conduit, SMSA and Babson College broke down barriers within the entrepreneurial ecosystem to benefit students of all ages and entrepreneurs of all kinds.
