Burns Latino Studies Academy celebrates with Cultural Dance and Cuisine

Burns Latino Studies Academy celebrated the end of CMTs and the beginning of Spring Break Latino Style.  The Kindergarten and First grade students judged a Latino Rice-Off Competition on Monday, 3-25!  What began as a challenge from me to Mrs. Jiantonio at the during their Brazil unit turned into an all out rice war.  9 different rice dishes represented Puerto Rico, Cuba, Peru, Brazil, and Portugal!  Our "chefs" included parents, teachers, Village staff and community members. All participants received a certificate of participation and a custom designed chef's apron.

The children used their 5 senses in order to decide which rice was the best.  They tasted and voted.  In the end the winner was the Sweet Coconut Rice from Puerto Rico.  The grand prize was a silver spoon!

On Wednesday, 3-27, Mrs. Lydia Perez and her group Yoruba 2 (part of Hartford Performs)  taught our entire staff and student body how to celebrate Afro-Latino Roots.  The younger students received a lesson in proper dance etiquette and skirt movement and ended the assembly in a Caribbean Carnival Parade.  The older students lined up to show off their moves.  Mrs. Lydia Perez brought skirts and instruments for the children to participate in the performance.  It was an exiting day!
On Thursday, 3-28 students received awards for improvement on MAP tests and academic achievement.
