Celebrating National Nutrition Month
Our Superintendent’s Message about National Nutrition Month
March is National Nutrition Month. Let’s take this opportunity to express our deep appreciation for the department of Food & Child Nutrition Services and the work they do each day to deliver nutritious and delicious meals to our students.
We know that all our beautiful and capable students need balanced meals to grow and develop healthfully. This nutrition, which is provided at no cost, also supports our students’ ability to learn and stay on track. Because 25% or more of the food served to our youth is locally sourced, the meals contain more fresh and nutritious items. This local sourcing also reduces our impact on the environment and supports businesses in our community.
The value of good nutrition has been recognized by Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, who recently proclaimed March National Nutrition Month in the state. The official proclamation states, “Connecticut residents, especially infants, children and young adults, should have access to nutritious, affordable and locally sourced foods to enable our future leaders to learn, grow and thrive.”
That aligns with the mission of Hartford Public Schools, which is to prepare students for success in and beyond school. On behalf of everyone at HPS, I offer my heartfelt thanks to all our Food & Child Nutrition Services staff who work tirelessly to provide healthy meals to our students.
