College & Career Exploration News from Milner School
The Hilton Hartford partners with Catholic Charities at Thirman L. Milner School and donates $2,000 to ensure every Milner student receives a new book of their choice at the spring Scholastic Book Fair.
On Thursday, December 7th 2017 Catholic Charities in partnership with Thirman L. Milner and the Hilton Hartford hosted the Most Improved Attendance Luncheon for students and families of Thirman L. Milner School. The event was an opportunity for the agency and the school to recognize students and families who have made great strides towards improving their school attendance. Students also explored culinary careers and were exposed to working in a professional kitchen. The event was made possible by the Hilton Hartford’s Blue Energy Committee who graciously sponsored and hosted the event. In addition they made a $2,000 donation to Thirman L. Milner School to ensure every student can purchase a new book their choosing at the spring Scholastic Book Fair. The Most Improved Attendance Luncheon was attended by the School Principal, Karen Lott, the CEO of Catholic Charities Marek Kukulka, former Mayor of Hartford Thirman L. Milner, Director of Programs Paula Mann-Agnew, and Catholic Charities Community School Director Thomas Oakley.
College and Career work included leveraging role models in the community and having them come in to speak with students about their high school, college, and professional experiences. One visitor included the Superintendent of Hartford Public Schools, Dr. Torres-Rodriguez.
Catholic Charities work included College Career work with our middle school students at Milner School. School staff and agency staff worked to get students onto multiple campuses including UConn, Central, and Eastern CT University.
