CONVOCATION 2012 Welcomes Teachers to the 2012-2013 School Year

On August 27th, 2012, about 1,500 Hartford Public School teachers descended upon Weaver High School auditorium to be celebrated, inspired and entertained by students, staff and alumni of the school district.  Ambassadors and high school principals, Terrell Hill (High School, Inc.) and Steven Dellinger-Pate (Pathways to Technology) did an excellent job of presiding over the ceremonies, which included rousing speeches by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Christina Kishimoto and Keith Sevigny, Annie Fisher STEM Magnet School Science teacher and Hartford’s 2012 Teacher of the Year.

The crowd was wowed by the middle school students in the drum line from Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy—they received the day’s first standing ovation.  Then, two very brave elementary school students led the Pledge of Allegiance:  Devon Alexander from Dr. Frank T. Simpson-Waverly School and Joraliz Goycoechea from the Environmental Sciences Magnet School at Mary Hooker.   The National Anthem was sung by Bulkeley High School’s very talented, confident and composed, Qusharia Perry, who also ended the ceremonies with an original song that she penned, inspired by the Hartford Public School’s new slogan, ‘Where the Future is Present.”  Another standing ovation.

Between songs, the teacher were rapt, listening to inspirational speeches by two outstanding alumni, Chastity Flores, a 2013 University of Connecticut graduate, and Kevin Henry, Esq., a 1993 Weaver graduate who is now an attorney at Ricketts, Andrews & Henry, LLC.  More standing ovations!

At breakfast, the teachers and staff members welcomed each other back with warm smiles, laughter and many hugs. During the day, the large crowd of educators broke into small groups to engage in professional development.

Convocation was a very warm welcome to the 2012-2013 school-year in Hartford.
