Dental Program: Oral Health Screenings for Students

Dental Program: Oral Health Screenings for Students

Dear Hartford Public School Families,

The State of Connecticut is now requiring that all public-school children receive an oral health screening.

This oral health screening is a quick and non-invasive screening that takes less than one minute. It will be performed by one of our licensed dental hygienists wearing full personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, face shield, gown, and hair bonnet).

As a result of these screenings, every year we find students who need dental care. We will send you the results of the screenings and, if necessary, offer you a dental appointment for your child at one of our own HPS dental clinics.

There is never a charge to you for our dental services.  We will bill Husky if your child is eligible.

Sincerely,

The HPS Dental Program

NOTE:  Please contact your child’s school nurse if you do not want your child to have a dental screening this school year.

PROGRAMA DENTAL

ORAL HEALTH FACTS FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC)

Tooth decay (cavities) is one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood in the United States. About 1 of 5 (20%) children aged 5–11 years have at least one untreated decayed tooth, and about 1 of 7 (13%) adolescents aged 12–19 years have at least one untreated decayed tooth.

Poor oral health can have a detrimental effect on children’s quality of life, their performance at school, and their success later in life. Tooth decay is preventable and ensuring that students have the preventive oral health services they need in school is important in helping them stay healthy and ready to learn. Dental sealants prevent tooth decay and also stop cavities from growing – they result in a large reduction in tooth decay among school-aged children 5-16 years of age.
