Dr. Narvaez Addresses HPS Teachers at Convocation 2015’s Kick-off to the School Year

On Monday, August 24, 2015, Hartford Public Schools officially welcomed back its teaching staff at its annual Teacher Convocation celebration in the field house of the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy. This year, the event offered teachers an opportunity to explore with Dr. Beth Schiavino-Narvaez her Strategic Operating Plan to help prepare for the coming academic year. The morning began with a light breakfast and included performances by the E.B. Kennelly School student drum line and students from the Latino Studies Academy at Burns School who led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, student Hector Ortiz, from Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy who sang the National Anthem, and the Hartford Public High School Health Sciences Academy Choir who led the teachers in an inspiring rendition of Katy Perry's, "Roar."

Dr. Narvaez takes a selfie with, "1,500+ of the world's best teachers" which was included in one of her first "tweets" on her Twitter feed @HartfordSuper, as the crowd cheers on, lead by the SMSA Tiger.

Teachers heard from Superintendent Beth Schiavino-Narvaez; Mayor Pedro E. Segarra; Richard F. Wareing, Chairman of the Hartford Board of Education; Leah Tarnowicz, 2015 Hartford Teacher of the Year from Martin Luther King Jr. School; and John Laverty, Principal of the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy.  Each of the speakers shared amusing and touching personal anecdotes about their experiences with teachers and teaching.
