Expeditionary Learning Academy at Moylan School (ELAMS) and Moylan Montessori Host PreK – 5th Events

On Friday, March 1st, the Expeditionary Learning Academy at Moylan School (ELAMS) and Moylan Montessori hosted two very exciting school events for their students in grades PreK – 5th grade.  The morning kicked off with the district’s Read Across America event promoting early literacy and celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  Students in grades PreK – 2nd grade welcomed special guest readers from the school and community to read Dr. Seuss classics such as The Cat in the Hat, One Fish, Two Fish, Horton Hears a Who, and The Lorax.  Ms. Whitney Peterson and Ms. Vivian Rivera-Jeffrey, Special Education teachers; Ms. Rachel Heckel, Student teacher, Ms. Karyn Meneses, Bilingual teacher; and Ms. Kathy Kelly and Ms. Alison Mickens, Social Workers all read to the ELAMS Kindergarten classes.  First grade classes welcomed Ms. Shannon Healy, Unit Director of the Boys & Girls Club Southwest Unit in Hartford and Ms. Heather Torpey, Manager of School Programming of the Discovery Center.  Both the Boys & Girls Club and the Discovery Center have worked with ELAMS to develop academic enrichment programs for students at the school.  In addition to Ms. Healy and Ms. Torpey, ELAMS welcomed Mr. Matt Proffitt, Director of Trinity College’s Dream Camp program, which serves students after school and provides academic and mentoring support.  Mr. Proffitt read to the ELAMS and Montessori 2nd grade students in the schools’ Auditorium.  Ms. Carolyn Potoff, Assistant Principal, served as special reader to the Montessori classes and the two multi-handicapped classrooms at the school.  Following the read alouds, students participated in Dr. Seuss activities in class and even wore their hand-made Cat in the Hat hats throughout the school day!

Later that afternoon, students in grades 3-5 participated in the school-wide Community Meeting, a traditional monthly school-wide meeting practiced in the Expeditionary Learning model.  In preparation for the CMT, the event was transformed into a CMT Pep Rally!  Student cheerleaders welcomed students into the gymnasium and the meeting’s agenda was focused around cheering and showing school support for the students taking the test, which kicked off on March 4th.  The Compass for Learners was the focus of the event – Courtesy, Craftsmanship, and RESILENCE.  During the event, students in Kindergarten – 2nd grade visited their ‘Adopt-a-Class’ classrooms and decorated their doors with inspiration!
