Green Apple Day of Service at Hartford Public High School Has GREAT Turn-out

More than 120 community, business and student volunteers came to Hartford Public High School on Saturday, September 28th for the Green Apple Day of Service. Students from the Academy of Engineering and Green Technology, The Academy of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Law and Government Academy, and St Joseph College, as well as business volunteers from UTC Aerospace, and CBIA, spent the morning working on the school grounds and in the neighborhood. Four trash crews picked up garbage along Forest Street, Farmington Avenue, and Capital Avenue. Landscape crews fixed four major landscaped beds by weeding, trimming shrubs, and planting bulbs. The playground crew weeded and raked the Little Owls Playground so that the children would have a safe place to play.Under the guidance of an engineer from UTC Aerospace, the construction crew build a compost bin made from pallets as well as raised beds for the new herb garden. All plant material waste was put in a large compost pile and not put in waste stream. Each participant received a green apple at the end of the day, and the knowledge that they had helped the school. Special thanks to Knox Parks for providing equipment and supplies. Special thanks to UTC for providing our lunch.
