Hartford Prepares to Celebrate Samuel Colt's 200th Birthday

(Hartford, CT). – On July 19th, the 200th birthday of Samuel Colt will be celebrated with special events and activities around the city. Focusing on Hartford’s rich collection of historic Colt assets and materials, the event will provide a glimpse into experiences that the Coltsville National Park will one day provide, and be the culmination of a series of exhibits and presentations during the preceding week that will build momentum towards the birthday gala commemoration on Saturday, July 19th, 2014.
"Consider this your invitation to Sam Colt's 200th commemoration. This will be a once in a lifetime event celebrating the history, innovation, and legacy of a great American icon” said Donna Swarr, a member of the Commemoration Committee. This family event will celebrate the history, innovation and legacy of Sam Colt to Hartford and it will include entertainment, vintage baseball games, inflatables, art zone, pony rides, merchants and food vendors including an old time beer garden at Colt Park.
The event will provide the opportunity of having once in a lifetime access to the most iconic venues once belonging to Samuel & Elizabeth Colt, like the onion dome in the old Colt Factory and the Armsmear mansion on Wethersfield Avenue, as well as exhibits of unique artifacts from Sam Colt’s personal possessions and rare items from the Colt Armory.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Samuel Colt 200 Commemoration Committee which includes: the City of Hartford, Church of the Good Shepherd, Connecticut State Library-Museum of Connecticut History, Wadsworth Atheneum, Cedar Hill Cemetery and others.
