A Conversation with Butch Lewis: The Black Panther Party in Connecticut

Date: Sunday, February 23, 2014, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Location: Center for Contemporary Culture, Downtown Library

HPL and the Hartford History Center, in partnership with the magazine Connecticut Explored, present a Black History Month discussion recalling the Black Panther Party in Connecticut during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s featuring Butch Lewis, activist and co-founder of the Hartford Chapter of the Black Panther Party. Lew Brown, veteran Hartford journalist, will moderate.

We Belong Here– Celebrating Hartford's Immigrant Artists

Date: Thursday, February 27, 2014, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Location:  Downtown Library 

Join us for a special evening celebrating significant accomplishments in the lives of Hartford's immigrant community! At 5:00 PM, witness a naturalization ceremony for Greater Hartford's newest American citizens, followed by the opening reception for "We Belong Here," an exhibit celebrating the lives and artwork of professional immigrant artists and Hartford students. Copies of the Library-published book Freedom Dreams: We Belong Here Hartford will be available for purchase. Free and open to the public.

History in a Heart

Date: On display through February 28, 2014

Location: Downtown Library, 3rd Floor

Collected nearly a century ago by pioneering Hartford librarian  Caroline M. Hewins, these antique Valentines capture the sentimentality of cards from 100 years ago. This exhibition of Miss Hewins's historic Valentines are on display through the month of February in the third floor corridor leading to the Youth Department.

Beatrice Fox Auerbach: The Woman, Her World and Her Wardrobe

Date: On display through May 10, 2014

Location: Hartford History Center, Downtown Library

Glimpse into the life of Beatrice Fox Auerbach in an exhibit of garments and personal items of the world traveler, influential philanthropist, and owner and CEO of America's largest privately owned department store, G. Fox & Co. The exhibit is presented in partnership with the University of Connecticut Historical Costume & Textile Collection Department, and is free and open to the public during Hartford History Center hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 1 PM – 5 PM. The Downtown Hartford Experience 1930s – 60s

Date: On display through March 13, 2014

Location: Downtown Library, 3rd Floor

Travel back to mid-20th century Hartford and discover or revisit your own memories of vibrant downtown landmarks from a bygone era. Images in this exhibit are from the collections of the Hartford History Center and the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford. Exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours.

Job and Career – Computer Coaching for Job Seekers

Date: Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Location: Downtown Library

Job seekers using the CTWorks@HPL job & career center will have access to a computer coach who will guide them through the online job searching process or resume creation using Word. You must have your Library Card with you in order to reserve a computer. The computer coach is available on a first-come, first-served basis for brief skills instruction.

Prepare for your GED

Date: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Location: Downtown Library


Join this one-hour orientation to learn about a free online GED course along with other prep tools, and register for the course. You can then access the program anywhere, anytime. A Library card is required to register. For more information please call 860.695.6337

Location: Blue Hills Branch

Money Wise @ HPL: Life Skills

Bone Up on Your Reading Skills with Gizmo!

Date:  Every first and third Saturday, 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Location: Downtown Youth Department

Children ages 5 and up are invited to read aloud one-on-one to Gizmo, a Paws to Read certified animal assisted reading dog, who loves every story and has no idea if a child makes a mistake. Young readers can relax and read at their own pace to a patient and willing listener. Registration encouraged. Call 860-695-6330 to register. 

Household Waste Disposal and Recycling: An Opportunity for Hartford's Neighborhoods

 Recycling, neighborhood clean-ups, and proper disposal of toxic and other waste can contribute to the improved health of our residents and communities.  Join us for an action-oriented discussion and be part of the solution!  Speakers include representatives from Keep America Beautiful, City of Hartford, Community Court, and Neighborhood Organizations.

Tax Preparation Help Available

Barbour Branch Moving to New Location!


Our Barbour Branch is packing up for a big move to a new, roomier space at 259 Barbour Street, two doors down from its current location. The branch will be closed Monday, January 13 – Sunday, February 9, reopening on Monday, February 10. The nearest branches for patron use during the closure are our Blue Hills Branch at 649 Blue Hills Avenue, and Ropkins Branch at 1750 Main Street.  As always, visit our virtual library, 24/7!
