UPcycled Sampler Opening Reception

Date: Friday, December 5, 2014, 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m.
Location: ArtWalk, Downtown Library

Join us to celebrate the opening of the ArtWalk’s newest exhibit, Upcycled Sampler, with artist Anita Gangi Balkun. Balkun’s work “reuses stuff headed for the recycle bin or trash and transforms it into unexpected forms.” The reception is free and open to the public, and the exhibit will be on display through January 9, 2015 during regular Library hours.Click here for more information.

Keeping That Person with Alzheimer’s Disease Engaged and Active

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and National Caregivers Month! This one-hour workshop is designed for caretakers, family and friends of a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Soldier’s Heart:the Civil War and Treatment of Post-Combat Stress

Date: Wednesday, November 19, 2014, 6:00 PM
Location: Hartford History Center, Downtown Library

History professor Matthew Warshauer will present on the early identification of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Connecticut soldiers who served in the Civil War. Based on his book “Inside Connecticut and the Civil War,” the presentation is a new look back to a time nearly 150 years ago, when Connecticut men were treated for post-war psychological trauma.

Come experience why everyone is talking about our wonderful Downtown Library! Just in time for the holidays and tablet and computer giftgiving, a member of our public services division will “show and tell” the many free digital services available to HPL cardholders, including music, books and magazine downloads, access to newspapers from around the world, and a variety of free online classes.

Hartford & beyond

“Hartford & Beyond” Exhibit:Four Decades of Buildings, Boats, and Bridges

Date: On display through December 15
Location: Downtown Library, 2nd Floor gallery

Hartford artist Chuck Paprzyca tells the story of the changes (and constants) in our local environment and throughout New England with “Hartford and Beyond: Four Decades of Buildings, Boats and Bridges.” An exhibit in the style of the late artist Richard Welling, the pen & ink drawings present stunning detail of area landmarks and celebrate the beauty of Connecticut buildings and other New England treasures. Art enthusiasts can meet Chuck Paprzyca at a light reception on Saturday, November 15 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Young Americans

"Young Americans" Exhibit

Date: On display October 27, 2014 – December 5, 2014
Location: Downtown Library, 3rd Floor

“Young Americans,” an exhibit by Atlanta-based photographer Sheila Pree Bright, explores the identities of U.S. citizens and immigrants pursuing citizenship by presenting portraits of Americans aged 18 to 25, each posing with an American flag. Four stunning photographs on display are from the collection of the Amistad Center for Art and Culture.

Art, History and Social Activism: CtFAC Honors Romare Bearden

Date: On display December 17-March 13 
Location: Downtown Library, Hartford History Center

In honor of the recent arrival of two spectacular Romare Bearden murals at Hartford Public Library, The Connecticut Fiber Arts Collective (CtFAC) presents a special exhibit that pays homage to the stylistic works of Bearden. CtFAC has created a collection of works in textiles, fiber, mixed media and surface design celebrating and recognizing one of the greatest visual artists of the 20th century. A special reception to meet the artists of CtFAC will be held on January 17, 2015, 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. in the 3rd floor Hartford History Center. This event is free and open to the public.

Salsa Socials

Salsa socials are back at HPL! Join us for an open session welcoming dancers of all levels, free of charge! No partner or experience needed. Dancing and teaching for over twenty years, Rey Bermudez will share his passion for salsa at these open dance sessions.

Date: Wednesdays, 12:00 noon and 4:00 p.m.
Location: The American Place, Downtown Library

Learn about our free GED online course and other prep tools. After registration, the program can be accessed anytime at home or the Library. Library Card required. Call 860-695-6337 for more information.

Downtown Library: Saturdays beginning September 6, 2014, 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays beginning September 9, 2014, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

Dwight Branch: Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning September 9, 2014, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Park Branch: Mondays, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Small Business Small Business Basics 5-Week Workshops

Date: Thursdays October 23-November 20, 2014 5:30 p.m.

The U.S. Small Business Administration, in partnership with Hartford Public Library and the Hartford SCORE chapter, hosts a 5-week small business workshops series at the Downtown Library. Subjects covered will include: What loan programs are available? How can I prepare a business plan? I want to start a business, what do I need to do? Free and open to the public.
