Hartford Public Schools Announces 2022 Teacher of the Year: Renee Sherriffs of Expeditionary Learning Academy at Moylan School

(HARTFORD, CT – Thursday, May 26, 2022) – Hartford Public Schools (HPS) is pleased to announce that our 2022 Teacher of the Year is Renee Sherriffs, a Special Education teacher at Expeditionary Learning Academy at Moylan School (ELAMS). The announcement was made at a ceremony tonight at Weaver High School.

Earlier this year, 38 HPS schools each nominated one teacher who exhibits exemplary teaching skills and a commitment to the belief that all children can learn and succeed. A district-wide committee made up of HPS directors, officials from the Hartford Federation of Teachers, and previous Teacher of the Year winners narrowed the group to three finalists after an intensive screening and interview process. Those finalists were Salwa Nethagani, a Science teacher at New Visions Academy, Danielle Dlubac, a 5th Grade teacher at Global Communications Academy, and Renee Sherriffs, a Special Education teacher at ELAMS. After reviewing each finalists’ written essays and recorded classroom lessons, the committee chose Ms. Renee Sherriffs as the 2022 Teacher of the Year.

“Renee is extremely dedicated to our students and to the mission of Hartford Public Schools,” said Christine McCarthy, principal at ELAMS. “She believes fully that every single student can be successful and can grow. I just know that every student in her classroom is getting the very best that we have to offer. ”

Ms. Sherriffs says she fell in love with Hartford’s children and school community after teaching summer school in a classroom for students with multiple disabilities at Batchelder School. She is now in her 9th year as a special education teacher in a self-contained iGoals classroom. iGoals classrooms have students with the highest needs. Ms. Sherriffs’ students are nonverbal, non-ambulatory, vision impaired, and have high medical needs. She uses a multi-sensory approach to teaching, incorporating hands-on learning and mobility exercises.

“When I visited Ms. Sherriffs’ classroom, she explained to me with tears in her eyes that these students are her babies,” said Hartford Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez. “I can confidently say that her babies could not be luckier to have Ms. Sherriffs as their teacher.”
