High School Students Attend College & Career Awareness Month Kick-off Event at University of Hartford

On the afternoon of October 1st at the Wilde Auditorium at the University of Hartford, high school students from around the district attended the kick-off event for College and Career Awareness Month.  There were over 200 people in attendance, including students from Bulkeley, Capital Prep, High School, Inc., Academy of Engineering and Green Technology, Law and Government Academy, and University High School of Science and Engineering.
 
Guest speakers included Dr. Christina M. Kishimoto, Superintendent of Hartford Public Schools; Dr. Walter L. Harrison, President of the University of Hartford; Dr. Ralph Mueller, Dean of Education, Nursing and Health Professions at University of Hartford; and Sonia Dinnall, Director of College and Career Readiness for Hartford Public Schools.

A panel of fantastic experts assembled by Sonia Dinnal, who also MC'ed the event included Shantel Honeyghan, Bulkeley High School, Class of 2011 and current student at UConn;  Martin Estey, Executive Director of the Hartford Consortium for Higher Education;  Professor Kenny Niehusser, Assistant Professor of Education Leadership Department of Education, University of Hartford; and Kevin Flynn, Hartford Public Schools Parent, College Career Specialist for Hartford Public Schools.
 
There were two fantastic student performances by the R.J. Kinsella Magnet School of Performing Arts and the event was expertly, and deliciously catered by students from the Culinary Arts Academy at Weaver High School.
