HMTCA 8th Graders Thank Gulf War Veteran Kevin Suares For his Service

During the week leading up to the celebration of Veterans Day, many 8th grade students learned about the meaning of ‘service to their country’. Guest speaker, Kevin Suares, a Gulf War veteran, talked about his experiences as an Air Force medic. In addition to his description of active duty, he also shared pictures and talked about visiting Washington, D.C. with veterans from World War II. Kevin was both informative and inspirational. Eighth grade student, Eliza Wisner said, “It was really important for him to come and talk to us, especially since war is not a topic that we discuss regularly and we had so many questions about it.”

Prior to meeting Kevin, students read about the history of Veterans Day and designed Medals of Honor to be awarded to family and friends who exemplify ‘valor’. The Veterans History Project at Central Connecticut State University was instrumental in connecting Kevin with students from Ms. Avery’s class at HMTCA. After hearing about the many challenges and rewards veterans have faced, students were honored to shake Kevin’s hand and ‘thank him for his service’.
