Hartford Public Schools Celebrated Staff Convocation to Kick-off the 2022-2023 School Year

Hartford Public Schools officially kicked off the 2022-2023 school year at its annual Convocation celebration, welcoming back teachers, paraeducators, staff, and civic and community partners. The event was held on Thursday, August 25, at Hartford’s XL Center.

After the Noah Webster Microsociety Magnet School Drumline offered a energizing performance to open the event, Superintendent Leslie Torres-Rodriguez welcomed HPS teachers and staff, administrators, and partners in the audience. Speakers also included Mayor Luke Bronin, Vice-Chair of the Hartford Board of Education Reverend A.J. Johnson, President of the Hartford Federation of Teachers Carol Gale.  HMTCA Music Teacher, Lisa Clayton delivered a goose-bumps-inducing rendition of our national anthem after two Naylor School 1st graders led the Pledge of Allegiance for the 2,000+ person audience.

The Superintendent provided an update about her “Take Heart” theme to prepare teachers and staff for the upcoming school year. Keynote speaker, Dr. Wizdom Powell shared a professional learning session with inspiring ideas about Radical Healing for teachers to take back to their classrooms, and speaker Rebecca Pacheco presented a talk including mindfulness activities and exercises to help our teachers and staff with Renewal. The audience of staff and partners also received a special message from 2022 Teacher of the Year Renee Sherriffs.

Student speakers and performers contributed their talents, representing Kinsella Magnet School of the Performing Arts, Naylor School, Hartford Public High School, and Weaver High School.  The Weaver High School Cheerleaders and several hilarious school mascots, including the SMSA Tiger, Claws McDonough, the Kennelly Bee, the Burr Eagle, the Breakthrough North Bulldog, the Weaver Beaver, the MD Fox Fox, and the Global Communications Lion got the crowd up on their feet dancing while the mascots lobbed T-shirts into the crowd.
