Hartford Public Schools Celebrated Staff Convocation to Kick-off the 2021-2022 School Year

Hartford Public Schools officially kicked off the 2021-2022 school year at its annual Convocation celebration, welcoming back teachers, staff, and community partners. The event was held on Thursday, August 26, at Weaver Campus in the George P. Thomas auditorium.

After the Kennelly School Premier Drumline offered a energizing performance to open the event, Superintendent Leslie Torres-Rodriguez welcomed HPS teachers and staff, administrators, and partners in the audience. Speakers also included Chair of the Hartford Board of Education Ayesha Clarke, and President of the Hartford Federation of Teachers Carol Gale.

The Superintendent provided an update and her “Relate, Redo, and Renew” theme to prepare teachers and staff for the upcoming school year. Keynote speaker Zaretta Hammond, author of Culturally Responsive Teaching & the Brain, shared a professional learning session with inspiring ideas  for teachers to take back to their classrooms. The audience of staff and partners also received a special message from 2021 Teacher of the Year Victoria Shears.

Student speakers and performers contributed their talents, representing Kennelly School, Expeditionary Learning Academy at Moylan School, Hartford Public High School, and Breakthrough Magnet School South.
