HPS Joined State Treasurer to Promote College Savings at SAND School

On Monday, September 13, HPS Superintendent Torres-Rodriguez and 5th graders at S.A.N.D. School joined State Treasurer Shawn T. Wooden, Trustee of the Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET), to celebrate College Savings Month and to welcome students back to school. During his visit to S.A.N.D., the Treasurer spoke with students about the importance of planning for their futures and encouraged students to participate in the CHET Dream Big! Competition.

“If kids only take away one thing from anything I say to them, I want it to be that planning now for their futures is one of the most important things they can do to set themselves up for success later in life,” said State Treasurer Wooden. “The CHET Dream Big! Competition offers students the opportunity to think about what they can do now to have an immediate impact on their community but to also stop and think how what they do now can turn into a career down the road.”

“The Dream Big! competition and CHET 529 program align with the mission of Hartford Public Schools and our new Three Year Plan priority to ensure students graduate ready for life, college, and career success,” said Superintendent Torres-Rodriguez. “With a CHET savings account, our students can move one step closer to realizing their post-secondary goals.”

Treasurer Wooden distributed ear buds and wireless mice students in attendance. CHET donated ear buds for every S.A.N.D. student, as well as computer mice for the classrooms. S.A.N.D. School was one of several schools to receive donations of school supplies from CHET.
