Hartford Public Schools officially welcomed back teachers, staff, and community partners at its annual Convocation celebration at the XL Center. The 2,000 person-strong crowd connected with Superintendent Leslie Torres-Rodriguez in her status report on the District Model for Excellence.

Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez, 2,000 teachers, and school staff honor the “Star-spangled Banner.”

Teachers were prepared for the coming academic year with a professional learning session from Keynote Speaker, Author and Educator, Ricky Robertson. Also addressing our crowd were Mayor Luke Bronin, Board of Education Chairman Julio Flores, and Connecticut State Treasurer Shawn Wooden, who were each introduced by our students.

The event included amazing performances by the Kennelly School Premier Drumline, the Hartford Public High School Chorus, and the HartBeat Dance Crew.  At the end of the Dance Crew’s performance, Dr. Torres-Rodriguez surprised the crowd by joining in and knocking it out of the park to roars and applause from the tremendous audience.

Members of the Hartford Public High School Chorus, Harold Rivera, Linnette Torres, and Kendra Osei-Antwi received a Standing-O after delivering a goosebump-inducing rendition of “Rise Up,” directed by Lisa Clayton, left. Beautiful singers.
Pledge of Allegiance was led by students from Noah Webster Microsociety Magnet School, Gabriella Peters and Amaiya Jordan.

Staff and partners also heard from students from Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School who led the Pledge of Allegiance, Hartford Public High School student Linette Torres who stunned the crowd with a beautiful rendition of our national anthem, and the beloved 2019 Teacher of the Year, Narciso Moquete, a fourth-grade teacher at SAND School who delivered the Charge to Teachers.
