HPS Kicks Off Winter High School Athletic Season

HPS Kicks Off Winter High School Athletic Season

Today, Jan. 19, Hartford Public Schools launches the district’s high school athletic season, which follows guidance from the 2020-2021 Winter Sports Plan released by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC). In alignment with the State of Connecticut’s Department of Public Health guidance for sports, the winter season will include low and moderate risk sports. For HPS, these sports include:

  • Basketball – Boys and Girls
  • Swimming
  • Indoor Track (skill development)
  • Sideline cheerleading

All district schools will follow the CIAC winter sports plan and protocols, as well as Department of Public Health and district protocols for interscholastic athletics.

For example, all participants, coaches, and officials will wear a face covering/mask that completely covers the nose and mouth, and that is worn directly on the face, at all times, including during active play. The latest guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also recommends that youth athletes wear cloth face coverings when they are on the sidelines, in the locker room, and traveling as well as during group training and active competition (except in pools or while using certain gymnastics apparatus).
