Jonathan Swan has spent his entire educational career dedicated to urban education. Mr. Swan began his career in education as a high school history teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts. After spending time teaching History and Social Studies at the high school and then middle school level, he went on to become a middle school assistant principal, and middle school principal. As a middle school principal, Mr. Swan gained experience in school turnaround. During this time, he led a team of educators in improving student performance for four consecutive years. Since Joining the Hartford Public Schools in 2010, Jonathan has worked in various capacities including: Assistant Director of School Design, the Director of Elementary Education, and Portfolio Director. As the Assistant Director of School Design, Mr. Swan worked on the redesigns of Moylan, McDonough, Renzulli, Naylor, and other schools.
In his current role as the Chief of Secondary Education, Mr. Swan is dedicated to improving teaching and learning for all students by supporting and developing the instructional leadership capacity of school leaders as a key lever in the school improvement process.

Office of Secondary Education
The Office of Secondary Education develops the leadership capacity of secondary and high school principals and supports the implementation of school improvement efforts. Under a coordinated service model, teams of central office staff work under the leadership of the Chief Officer of Secondary Education. Through their efforts, principals receive professional development and differentiated support to improve student outcomes.
