The event was led by Hartford Public Schools’ Dr. Dolores Garcia-Blocker, the Executive Director of Post-Secondary Success & Alternative Programming.  Dr Garcia-Blocker remembers the inspiration for the fair and shares her reflections:

I was inspired to do this college fair based upon my own experience navigating the college application process with my child this year virtually. It has been really challenging working during this pandemic. I wanted to make sure that every 11th grader and his/her family had the opportunity to participate in a college fair before ending the school year. The college admissions counselors who attended are the counselors who read the applications for this region. The event was a success.

We had 56 colleges participating from Maine to Florida. A variety of workshops were offered from Writing an Effective College Essay to Finding Money to Finance College. We had colleges who were still accepting applications for Fall 2021 admissions for our current 12 graders. The day ended with a special session with Hartford Promise and all students who are on-track – or close to on-track – to receive the scholarship next year.

About 500 students attended. Their feedback was overwhelmingly positive. They want more workshops on Essay Writing and Internships/Jobs. They want to have another virtual college fair that includes Ivy League Schools, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and more Out-of-State Schools. The students felt the day was a good use of their time and they found the event to be very informative.

I am thrilled that the students took full advantage of this day and am motivated to do more for them and their high school peers in the fall.

College Fair partner, Career Beginnings is a community-based organization that has been serving Hartford Public Schools since 1986. They partnered with the Hartford Public School district and Higher Heights to organize the event, communicate the details of the event to students and families, and support the live workshops. Amy Molinaro, Director of Career Beginnings reflects, “It was fantastic to see students and families look to the future and begin to plan for college after such a difficult 15 months.”

The team sends special thanks to all who supported the event including:
