McDonough Expeditionary Learning School’s Music & Art Exhibition Honors Veterans

Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students at McDonough Expeditionary Learning School (MELS) created and produced a music and art exhibition to commemorate and honor the nation’s veterans.  Under excellent guidance from music teacher, Megan Arsenault and art teacher, Kath Lanz, students showcased thematic artwork and designed a musical performance around American pride.  The event took place on October 30, 2013 in MELS auditorium.  The audience, which included local community veterans, enjoyed cider and cookies while perusing multiple art exhibits and packed the auditorium for the musical portion of the program.  Select students, under the direction of Ms. Arsenault, presented the colors to both open and close the ceremony as an Honor Guard.  Further, to honor the veterans in the audience, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students gathered at the front of the stage to sing their version of Fix You, a popular Coldplay song, which received a standing ovation from the packed audience.  Artwork included multiple strands of media ranging from abstract to realism.  The exposition was a collaborative process between art and music students in line with the Expeditionary Learning model, which promotes community engagement and student-led learning.  Be on the lookout for the next Music and Art Exhibit at MELS!
