Meet Charlene Perez, Hartford Community Schools Coordinator

As the Hartford Community Schools Coordinator, Charlene Perez works closely with the lead agencies that partner with HPS community schools. She monitors the fidelity to the community schools model, serves as resource to the Community School Directors and Principals, and encourages the sharing of best practices across all seven HPS community schools.

Charlene is currently working on creating a Hartford Community Schools video to highlight and promote HPS seven community schools. She is also helping to revamp the data collection about community schools partners and partnerships in an effort to showcase the effectiveness of the community schools model.

Charlene is also interested in knowing which community-based organizations are willing to partner with HPS community schools to meet the needs of the students and their families. She welcomes and encourages HPS staff to contact her if they have any questions or would like to learn more about HPS community schools.

Charlene graduated with honors from Bulkeley High School and has a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services and a graduate certificate in Non-Profit Management from the University of Connecticut. She has worked with children and youth in Hartford since 2000.  Charlene worked with the Village for Families and Children for ten years, during which time she served as Community School Director for Alfred E. Burr School, one of the first cohort of Community Schools developed in the city.  Most recently, she served as Operations Manager for Burr Community School and is committed to continue her focus on working to make sure all children in Hartford thrive.  Among her many community volunteer activities, Charlene is an active member of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority and serves as an officer for the CT Institute for Community Development Puerto Rican Day Parade Committee.

“My work is meaningful because it’s on behalf of Hartford’s children and families. Hartford is where I was born, raised and I am proud to say I attended Hartford Public Schools. Being able to give back to my community is so rewarding."
