Message from Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodríguez June 2017
Dear Hartford Public Schools, Families, Colleagues, and Friends:
We blinked and the school year is almost at an end. Our students excelled in so many ways: in reading and math, in engineering and internships, as new English Learners, in STEM and robotics, in charitable giving and community service, in entrepreneurship, at the STEM Expo, in the Arts, at the National Invention Convention, and, best of all, hundreds of acceptance letters to our high school seniors have arrived, and our seniors are on their way to college and careers. Congratulations on a great school year.
To our graduates: we wish you health, happiness, and prosperity in the next steps of your journeys. Please come back and visit us; please come back and work with us. I am a child of Hartford and I could not be happier than I am now, working towards a dream of equitable education for all students in our great city.
In May, we celebrated our teachers at the Teacher of the Year banquet. Congratulations to all of our teachers, and especially to Sonia Turner of Annie Fisher STEM Magnet School who is our 2017 Hartford Public Schools Teacher of the Year, and another child of Hartford. You inspire us all with your words, your thoughts, and your deeds. To all of our teachers: magic happens in classrooms; thank you for your hard work every day, and for believing that our children and youth deserve the very best.
As a key priority of my leadership, the Hartford Public Schools district will soon undergo a school redesign process to be planned and implemented in the next few years. In order to re-engage in this process, Leadership Greater Hartford will facilitate a discussion with families, district and school staff, and community members to provide essential input and assistance in this process.
Please join us for a Community Conversation on District-wide School Redesign on June 12, 2017 at 5:30PM at the Artists Collective, 1200 Albany Avenue in Hartford. Please register by June 10, 2017. Click here or call 860-695-8789
We are looking forward to the many opportunities for Summer Learning and continuous improvement for our students in the next months. For more information and for important health and nutrition resources, visit https://www.hartfordschools.org/Summer2017
One of my leadership expectations for all staff and students in the district is the idea of continuous improvement; we must all strive to get a little better at what we do day-by-day. The most important thing you can do for your child this summer is to encourage them to read every day. Some of the best summer adventures are as close as the books in your local library!
I am so honored to serve as your superintendent and to partner with you in helping our children become all that they can be. I look forward to sharing stories of summer adventures with you and your students when we all get back to school on Tuesday, August 29, 2017.
Have a wonderful, safe, and healthy summer! Read every day!
Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.
