Message from our Superintendent, January 3, 2018
January 3, 2018
Dear Hartford Public Schools Families,
On December 19th, I presented recommendations to the Board of Education that I believe will ensure that we provide high-quality education for all students. The proposed plan reflects the priorities we have heard and addresses the significant challenges we face — deep student needs, persistently low student performance, declining enrollment, aging, low-quality facilities, and fiscal constraints.
Your feedback on the recommendations is important. The Hartford Board of Education is scheduled to vote on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. Prior to the vote, there will be multiple opportunities to learn more, provide feedback, and share your thoughts. I urge you to lend your voice to inform the Board’s decisions at future meetings, public hearings, by phone at 860-200-8005, or online at https://www.hartfordschools.org/districtmodel .
Please see attached for a list of activities that offer different types of engagement opportunities. The Board Workshop is a meeting that is open to the public in which Board members will discuss the recommendations more deeply, ask questions, and explore implications. Board Workshops do not include an opportunity for public comment. Instead, Board Public Hearings are held so that Board members may hear directly from the public regarding any of the recommendations. Meanwhile, Community Conversations are sessions designed to answer questions about the recommendations. If you have questions to be addressed at the Community Conversations, please submit them before January 8, 2018 by visiting https://www.hartfordschools.org/questions/.
There are tough decisions ahead, yet this is our opportunity for real transformation, and its success depends upon all of our voices. You, our families and children are our primary focus. Our hope is to build a network of excellent schools for our children – including clear pathways to great schools for students within their own neighborhoods.
I believe that education saves lives. I know that we cannot continue to operate the way we do now. As one team, we must refocus our work and resources in ways that work for all of our students. I am confident that this plan will put Hartford Public Schools on a healthier path for all of our students.
As we begin a new year which will undoubtedly hold both challenges and great opportunities, I am grateful for your commitment and dedication to our students. I share your hopes and dreams for ALL of our beautiful, capable children. Together, we can realize our dreams.
Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez
