SPOTLIGHT on EXCELLENCE Issue 22 January 14, 2013
Message from the Superintendent
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the rest of your own staircase.
This month in Spotlight we talk about Student Leadership, about our Student Senate (our high school students who have stepped up to represent their student bodies,) and our two Student Senators who are the newly elected Delegates to the Board of Education. Our student leaders are taking their first steps in creating their own paths, for themselves and, with great initiative, taking courageous steps towards helping others in civic duty. We have faith in them and will help to guide them on their paths to be the leaders of tomorrow, as they will help guide us as they teach us about what is happening in the schools from a student’s perspective.
At their second Student Senate meeting which took place last week they discussed ideas for school safety, student mentorship, and how to help 9th grade high school students best begin their path toward college preparation. College and career readiness is a core Hartford Public Schools goal. Keep an eye out for an exciting announcement that takes place on January 22nd at Hartford Public High School. We will be providing a live video stream of this announcement, making it available to all high and middle schools via the Internet, so all 9th graders can share our excitement about the Hartford Promise.
Please join us in congratulating our student leaders, and in supporting all Hartford Public School students as they begin their faithful steps on their paths towards college.
Dr. Christina M. Kishimoto, Superintendent, Hartford Public Schools
