Message from the Superintendent March 2014

Message from the Superintendent  March 2014

Dear Hartford Public Schools Family,

The energy that everyone in our district– our teachers, our students, our administrators, our families, our clergy, and our business  leaders– generates with their hard work can only turn into success for our children.  Through our goals of the Third Grade Promise, the Middle Years Redesign and College Readiness, the focus of our energy is sharpened.   This month we are preparing to celebrate the successes of our teachers.  Each of our schools has the opportunity to nominate a teacher for our Annual Teacher of the Year Awards ceremony which takes place on May 22rd. March is also National Social Workers Month and this month we recognize our social workers and the invaluable work they do in our schools and community.

Let me thank you for your support in helping your students to be ready for the PSAT, SAT, CMT, CAPT and SBAC testing.  Parents,  thank you for sending your students to school well-rested and ready.  Teachers and administrators,  thank you for your cooperation as we work through changes in technology and testing formats.

With the month of March comes our anticipation that spring will arrive soon and with it warmer weather.  This reminds us that everything has its cycles, its seasons.   My term as your superintendent will end soon.  Please know that you are invited to participate in the search for our new Superintendent by attending the Citywide Superintendent Search Community Forums during the week of April 7th wherein the public can interview the finalists for the position.  Per the Superintendent Search Committee:  “These forums will provide an opportunity for the community to get to know the applicants more intimately and to ask them questions related to the needs of the school district and the community. We encourage you to participate in this process and to join us in our upcoming Superintendent Search Community Forums.”    Please check the hartfordschools.org website during the beginning of April and click on Superintendent Search for updated information.

The 2014-15 budget planning process is also upon us. This is an important time period for reviewing progress on our annual strategic goals in order to set funding priorities for the following year. On April 8th from 5:30pm to 8:00pm at Simpson-Waverly School, at 55 Waverly Street the Board of Education holds its Budget Workshop and you are welcome to attend.  On April 15th, I will present a detailed budget to the Hartford Board of Education.  This public meeting will be held at R.J. Kinsella Magnet School of the Performing Arts from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at 65 Van Block Avenue, and I invite you to attend.

Together, the parents, families, teachers and students of Hartford have much more hard work to do, many things to discuss, and much to celebrate.  I wish you and your family a wonderful Spring Recess, and hope you can enjoy some invaluable family time.

March on, Hartford!

Sincerely,

Dr. Christina M. Kishimoto
