More than 100 HPS Seniors Earn the CT Seal of Biliteracy

For the second year, Hartford Public School High School Seniors earned the Connecticut Seal of Biliteracy, an award given to students who demonstrate proficiency in two or more languages by the time they graduate.

This year, 103 students earned the Seal of Biliteracy, which will be placed on their diplomas and noted on their transcripts. Students from all 12 HPS high schools have been awarded the Seal.

The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes a student’s dedication to building literacy skills in both English and another language. The award may also help ensure proper placement in college or university-level courses and provide evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers.

Earning the Seal was particularly challenging in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and transition to distance learning. Students were required to not only meet English Language Arts requirements for graduation but also demonstrate proficiency in a second (or third) language by passing an assessment — the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages’ (ACTFL) Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages —  or completing an Oral Proficiency Interview and a Writing Proficiency Test.

For the first time this year, because of the pandemic, these requirements had to be met at home with parent or guardian proctors.

Despite the challenge, students proved their proficiency in several languages, including Spanish, Swahili, Italian, Portuguese, Bosnian, Karen, French, Arabic, Albanian, Jamaican Patois, Polish, and Vietnamese. This range of languages reflects the rich diversity of Hartford students and the skills they will bring to colleges and future careers.

Notable distinctions:

  • Senior Sara Dias Cardoso of Classical Magnet earned the Seal in both Spanish and Portuguese, making her officially trilingual
  • Two students from Capital Preparatory Magnet School earned the Seal after their graduation: Duc Ha (Vietnamese) and Tantine Shipola (Swahili)
