In light of the presidential election and in order to ensure a safe and nurturing learning environment in all our schools, we’d like to keep our families informed of our efforts to create awareness and support for students who may be experiencing adverse reactions to the results of the election. We also want to communicate to our families that our staff will be extra vigilant as students may be experiencing a variety of feelings which may include uncertainty, fear, anxiety, and depression.
Hartford Public Schools wants our families to know that we care deeply about your children and we are passionate about working together as a school community to provide students with an educational experience that focuses not only on their academic needs, but also their emotional well-being. Our population of students includes children of color, multiple religious and immigrant groups, LGBTQ students, students with disabilities, and/or family members that they love and care about in these groups. These protected classes have been referred to in a negative light at times during the presidential campaign, and we want parents and guardians to know that Hartford Public Schools will do everything in its power to protect the dignity and educational rights of ALL our students regardless of color, race, creed, ethnicity or sexual orientation, among others.
If your child relates feelings of concern to you after having an experience that has caused them distress or has been hurtful, please notify school administrators immediately. Staff members are aware of existing protocols for students and parents to report any behavior that is inappropriate or malicious in nature. Staff has been directed to keep a heightened sensitivity to these concerns from our students and families. Please visit the main office at your child’s school and fill out a “Student Incident Intake Form” to report any such incidents. If you are unable to visit the school, please call us on the phone. You will be directed to a designated staff member that will listen to your concerns and take appropriate action.
We are hopeful that we can support our students and families by being proactive and aware of how recent events may affect our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us and we will do everything in our capacity to assist you.
