S.A.N.D. School Students Establish Cancer Team to Raise Funds for CCMC Cancer Center

Three 4th grade young ladies, Irenis Conception, Dayana Traveras, and Naysha Zayas were recently inspired to start up the S.A.N.D. Cancer Team. The inspiration came from one of the students recent visits to NY with her family one weekend. During this visit she saw a homeless person with cancer was asking for donations to go extensive medical treatment. The young lady's mother gave what little money she had in her pocket to the individual. The student then came back to S.A.N.D. and begin to share this story with her teacher Ms. Gomez and class mates.

Soon after the student got together with a group of friends and formed the S.A.N.D. Cancer Team. The administration team, Mr. Heredia-Principal, Ms. McCoy-Vice Principal, and Ms. Barnes-Dean let Irenis, Dayana, and Naysha know that they had their full support. With the assistance of support staff, Ms. Garcia, Project and Program Coordinator and Mr. Porter, Community Specialist, and the young ladies planned a dress down day for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students on the last day of school during which students donated $2.00 to participate.

The Cancer Team also went around the school presenting to staff members and students sharing the story of the homeless individual with cancer and why bringing awareness to this cause is important. In the end the Cancer Team collected $209.16 which will be donated to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (Cancer Center). Mr. Heredia awarded each of the young ladies with a citizenship medal for their efforts and soaring to the next level.

Philanthropic initiatives like this follow a stream of paying it forward projects S.A.N.D. has participated in for example the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), and the Muscular Dystrophy Association Hop-A-Thon (MDA).
