Parents Are Involved!
One strength of a choice-based school district is that individual students have the best chance to find a school that matches their particular skills, outlook, interests, and character. The Hartford Public Schools offers a remarkable array of free-to-families schools within our system; each school has its own School Governance Council to help support its specific area of focus.
For each School Governance Council, half the membership is parents of students at that school, with the other members coming from the school (including students), community, or other partners. It is another way that our commitment to being accountable for the success of our schools and students is clear and open for all to see.
On October 24, 2013, over 120 members of the School Governance Councils attended a training on the development and implementation of the academic School-Parent Compact. The School-Parent Compact as mandated as part of the Title I federal legislation, as well as the CT School Governance Council legislation. Hartford Board of Education policy also charges the School Governance Councils with the development and approval of the Compacts.
